I KNEW
Mother prayed when I called myself
bruja
In my Bushwick Garden
I conjured up potions
I’d cast magic spells
I knew
I was one with the earth
I used soft rocks to scribble
stories
on the bricks of the house I lived in
Collected seeds
crushed up flower petals
and weeds
I knew
I was one with the earth
I loved to lay in the garden
eyes
meeting blue oceans
I could feel myself levitating
Imagined flying away
I know
I am one with the earth
