BY JOANNA C. VALENTE
In times of uncertainty, I turn to music to help me cope, find inspiration, and develop ways to move forward. Thankfully, there’s a new album out that might be the perfect mix of new and old, nostalgic and timely, to delve into. Singer Tatiana Eva Marie and guitarist Michael Valeanu just released a new album: Bonjour Tristesse.
New York City-based musician, Tatiana, was recently named “one of the best young singers around” by the Wall Street Journal and listed on Vanity Fair’s rising jazz stars. She and Valeanu, who are old friends, decided to team up in late 2019 to create a melancholic, old-fashioned French chanson dream. The album was the result of one recording session (with help from engineer Mike Perez-Cisneros).
My favorites include “I Get Along Without You Very Well,” which is eerily reminiscent of a deeper-voiced Blossom Dearie and bittersweet Chet Baker - as well as “Stardust” and “They Say It’s Spring.”
